Measuring and understanding the creative economy: Methodological approaches and issues.
The first seminar will focus on the methodological approaches used and the issues encountered when investigating the creative industries and the regional dimension. Speakers will be invited  to present on a range of methods and approaches involved in the study of the creative and cultural industries. Both quantitative, qualitative and ethnographies approaches should be considered. Papers should consider theoretical perspectives and practical examples of the issues and challenges faced by researchers trying to capture the economic, social and cultural dimensions of the creative economy.

Creative industries, scenes, cities, places: idiosyncratic dimensions of the cultural economy
The second seminar will focus on the relationship between places (cities, neighbourhoods, and quarters) and the development of creative industries. It will question what makes a place a ‘creative place’. In particular it will look at the idiosyncratic dimensions which link creative practitioners to the place where they operate. The seminar will also address the fate of “non-creative” workers and places and explore how places can become more creative and who can be responsible for making this happen.

Creative industries and regional policies: making space and giving space
The third seminar will explore the relationship between creative industries and local and regional policies. This will be done through the use of case studies and more general papers. A set of questions will be explored: Do creative industries need policy support? Do local and regional policies make a difference to the development of creative industries? At what geographical levels should policy and support initiatives be implemented? How should regional policy be integrated with national policy? What are the best policy tools? To what extent economic development policies are sufficient? What about international policy? How and to what extent supporting creative industries foster regional economic development? The rationale for this seminar will be further developed using findings from the ACRE project, a FP6 project looking at the development of creative and knowledge industries in 13 cities in Europe.
